Loses 40-man spot The Athletics designated Barrera for assignment Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Impact Formerly one of the top prospects in Oakland's system, Barrera has seen his standing in the organization take a hit since posting an .870 OPS at Double-A Midland in 2019. He received limited action with the big club in 2021 but otherwise turned in a pedestrian campaign at Triple-A Las Vegas, slashing .276/.348/.393 across 386 plate appearances while stealing 10 bases in 12 attempts. Barrera was expected to compete for a spot in Oakland's talent-deprived outfield in spring training, but he was late to camp due to visa issues and never made much of a run at a roster spot. Now 26 years old, the prospect luster has largely worn off on Barrera, who will lose his spot on the 40-man roster with Oakland bringing aboard reliever Gabe Klobosits in a corresponding move.
