Fails to finish five frames Scherzer lasted just 4.1 innings in Wednesday's wild-card win over the Cardinals, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out four. Impact Scherzer closed the season with a pair of poor starts, giving up five earned runs in both outings. While he only gave up one run in his first start of the postseason, he was generally unconvincing, allowing baserunners in all five innings while requiring 94 pitches to record just 13 outs. He wasn't hit particularly hard, as all three hits he allowed were singles, and the one run the Cardinals managed to score required Tommy Edman to advance to third on a foul out and cross the plate on a wild pitch, but this wasn't the dominant Scherzer we've come to expect. The fact that manager Dave Roberts pulled him in the fifth inning could foreshadow how Scherzer will be used the rest of the postseason.
