Headed for injured list Soroka will be placed on the 15-day injured list after experiencing numbness in his fingers Tuesday, Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Impact Soroka was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Tuesday against St. Louis and gave up five runs in just three innings while striking out six batters and walking one. However, his return to the majors will be short-lived, and he'll be put on the shelf for at least two weeks. Given his injury history and poor performance this season, there's no guarantee Soroka pitches in the majors again this year.

He could receive an additional start this weekend versus the Pirates, as well, as Atlanta looks to fill the fifth spot in their rotation until Kyle Wright (shoulder) is ready. Soroka has posted a 5.52 ERA and 23:11 K:BB over 29.1 innings in the majors this season. He's coming off a terrific August with Gwinnett, having put up a 2.77 ERA and 34:8 K;BB across 26 frames.

Impact The right-hander was pitching well Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out nine without walking a batter, but the organization is focused on the bigger picture. Soroka has tossed 77.2 innings at Triple-A in 2023 plus another 29.1 in the majors, a fairly sizable workload for the 26-year-old considering he managed only 38.2 innings total over the prior three years while recovering from three surgeries on his Achilles tendon. He appears to be rounding into form -- he's got a 1.62 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 25:5 K:BB in August for Gwinnett -- but Atlanta may prefer to have him finish out the year healthy and looking ahead to 2024 rather than bring him back up to the big-league roster for the stretch run.

Impact Soroka had inconsistent results after rejoining Atlanta in late June, as he posted a 4.12 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 19.2 innings over four appearances (three starts). He gave up four runs in six innings during Friday's game in Milwaukee but will head back to the minors after Atlanta claimed Yonny Chirinos off waivers Sunday.

Impact Soroka was pressed into emergency relief duty this past Sunday when Kolby Allard was forced from his start due to left shoulder nerve inflammation. Allard is now on the 60-day injured list and the NL East leaders are still deciding how to cover his spot Saturday versus the Brewers. Soroka has posted a rough 5.40 ERA and 1.50 WHIP through 23.1 major-league innings this year, but he seems to be secure in a regular rotation role for the time being.

Impact Luis Robert took Soroka deep in the sixth inning to account for all the damage off him, but Atlanta was already facing a 6-1 deficit at that point. The early exit of Kolby Allard (shoulder) forced Soroka into action Sunday for 30 pitches (25 strikes) -- the right-hander is currently scheduled to get the start Friday, but the team could shuffle around its rotation and bump him into Allard's spot Saturday if the southpaw is forced to miss his turn, or even just to give Soroka an extra day's rest.

Impact The right-hander also hit two batters with pitches and tossed a wild pitch as he managed to get only 57 of his 99 offerings over the plate before exiting. While the scoreless outing was encouraging, Soroka put runners in scoring position during every inning he worked, and it was as much good luck as good pitching that saw him escape unscathed. Atlanta's rotation plans after the All-Star break aren't yet clear, but it seems likely Soroka will get at least one more chance in the majors to continue his long recovery from multiple Achilles injuries.
