Added depth could make Twins starting pitcher Bailey Ober odd man out to begin season The trade for Pablo López complicates Ober’s path to a spot in the starting rotation.
Kenta Maeda - Throws first bullpen of spring Maeda (elbow) threw about 40 pitches Thursday in his first bullpen session of the spring, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Impact Park notes that Maeda only topped out at around 89 mph, but that is to be expected here in February for a pitcher who is coming off Tommy John surgery. The 34-year-old right-hander is now more than 16 months removed from that procedure and is expected to have a spot near the back of the Twins' season-opening starting rotation. There's certainly some intriguing bounceback-type upside in Maeda's outlook for 2023.

Tyler Mahle - No restrictions at camp Mahle (shoulder) entered Twins camp this spring with no restrictions, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Impact Mahle battled shoulder troubles in both Cincinnati and Minnesota last season, but he was able to enjoy a fairly normal winter routine and even went to Driveline to work on a new slider. The 28-year-old right-hander is shaping up as a bounceback candidate for 2023 after posting a relatively underwhelming 4.40 ERA and 126:43 K:BB across his 120 2/3 total innings (23 starts) in 2022.

Impact Duran is all good now -- he's been throwing regular bullpen sessions at Twins camp -- but he decided to remove himself from consideration for the Dominican Republic's bullpen when he experienced a bit of hamstring tightness last month. The 25-year-old burst onto the MLB scene in 2022 and is expected to have a share of the closer role in Minnesota this season. Jorge Lopez looks like the primary frontrunner for saves.

Chris Paddack - Eyeing late-season return Paddack (elbow) said Wednesday that he began a throwing program last week and has progressed to throwing off flat ground from 60 feet, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Impact Paddack may be able to get back on the mound and/or face hitters by the end of spring training, but he acknowledged that he likely won't be ready to make his 2023 debut until August or September while he recovers from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last May. Because it was the second Tommy John surgery of his career, Paddack may face an uphill battle to return anywhere close to the level of success he enjoyed as a rookie with the Padres in 2019. Given that they signed Paddack to a three-year, $12.53 million contract extension in January, the Twins must at least be encouraged by how he's responded thus far from surgery.

Impact Winder was able to make 11 starts and 15 total appearances for the Twins in 2022, and while there were some flashes in his time with Minnesota, he ultimately finished with a 4.70 ERA over 67 innings of work. The right-hander will have a chance to win the fifth starting spot, but there's just as much risk in his profile -- if not more -- than there is reward.

Impact "AK has been in a great spot," said Falvey. "Our strength guys said [the wrist is] probably in as good of a spot as they've seen him coming into camp, where he's at. The early returns on swinging are very positive." Kirilloff needed surgery last August to shorten the ulnar bone in his right wrist and clean up scar tissue, but all signs point to him being a full-go for Opening Day here in 2023.
