Mitch Keller - Shelled in loss Keller (10-7) took the loss Wednesday against the Padres, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out two.

Impact Keller never found his footing in this one, failing to record an out before surrendering a three-run home run to Jake Cronenworth in the opening frame. Things didn't get much better from there, as Keller found himself down 8-0 in the third inning following a two-run blast by David Peralta. Keller has now given up a combined 15 earned runs over his past two starts, causing his ERA to balloon from 3.20 to 3.95. The right-hander now owns a 3.95 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 125:40 K:BB across 141.1 innings (24 starts) this season. Keller will look to get back on track in his next start, currently scheduled for early next week against the Rangers.

Impact The reliever could progress to facing hitter soon and it would appear he'll have a shot to be activated from the 15-day injured list when first eligible on Aug. 23. Holderman has been out with a right wrist sprain.

Andrew McCutchen - Getting rest day McCutchen is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres.

Impact With the Pirates wrapping up their series in San Diego with a day game after a night game, McCutchen will receive some routine maintenance. The 37-year-old has been in the midst of a heater to begin August, slashing .370/.485/.741 with three home runs, nine RBI and six runs over eight games.

Oneil Cruz - Bowing out of lineup Wednesday Cruz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres.

Impact After making a return from an illness, Cruz had started in each of the Pirates' last six games, going 9-for-24 with three extra-base hits and a 3:6 BB:K. Though he looks to be fully healthy again, Cruz will join fellow left-handed hitters Rowdy Tellez and Ji Hwan Bae on the bench as the Padres send southpaw Martin Perez to the hill.

Ji Hwan Bae - Playing time trending down Bae is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres.

Impact Bae will hit the bench along with fellow left-handed hitters Rowdy Tellez and Oneil Cruz while the Pirates send southpaw Martin Perez to the hill for the series finale. Unlike Tellez and Cruz, Bae's spot in the lineup against right-handed pitching doesn't look to be completely secure. Bae was on the bench for three of the Pirates' last five matchups with right-handers, as Michael Taylor started in center field in each of those contests.

Luis L. Ortiz - No run support in loss Ortiz (5-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Padres, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings.

Impact Tuesday was Ortiz's first loss in eight starts this year and it was his first loss since May 8. The Padres tacked on an unearned run against him in the first due to a fielding error by Oneil Cruz. He went on to face one over the minimum through the next three innings before David Peralta led off the fifth with a solo home run to right center field. Tuesday was the second time Ortiz had faced the Padres in less than a week and he fared well after allowing four runs against them the first time out. He's now given up one or fewer earned runs in four of his last seven starts and owns a 3.32 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 71:30 K:BB in 95 innings. Oritz lines up to face the Rangers on the road next week.

Bryan Reynolds - Three hits Tuesday Reynolds went 3-for-4 with a double in Tuesday's loss to the Padres.

Impact Reynolds was the only Pirate to have multiple hits as well as an extra base hit in Tuesday's shutout loss. His eighth inning double was his first extra base hit since Aug. 4. He's been one of the few consistent hitters in the lineup over the course of the season and has been hitting exceptionally well over this last month. Since July 13, Reynolds is slashing .353/.433/.471 with two homers, 13 RBI and 12 runs. For the year, the 29-year-old All-Star is slashing .288/.355/.473 with 19 homers, 69 RBI, 54 runs, six steals and a 43:114 BB:K in 516 plate appearances.
