Impact Hill made his second Grapefruit League appearance, but pitched in bulk relief behind starter Garrett Whitlock. The roles were reversed in his previous appearance; Hill started while Whitlock threw multiple relief innings. The two are expected to pitch in the same game Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Hill and Whitlock are vying for the final spot in the rotation, which could last as long as it takes Chris Sale (rib) to return from injury. Either way, each pitcher is expected to have a role on the staff, whether that be as a starter or high-leverage reliever.

Impact Hill kicked off his bid to become the Red Sox's fifth starter Tuesday. Boston manager Alex Cora set the first four in the rotation after he named Michael Wacha as the fourth starter Tuesday. That leaves one job for Hill or Garrett Whitlock, who followed Hill on Tuesday with a couple of scoreless innings himself. However, the Red Sox grew fond of Whitlock's versatility in the bullpen last season, and Cora hasn't ruled out using him to close out games. The 42-year-old Hill will likely be the fifth starter when the regular season opens, but that leaves him on shaky ground when Chris Sale (rib) eventually returns.

Impact It will be the veteran left-hander's third stint with the Red Sox after tossing 158.2 innings last season, which marks his highest innings total since 2007. Hill split 2021 between the Mets and Rays and posted a 3.86 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 150:55 K:BB in 32 outings.
