Impact Schrock had been in big-league camp as a non-roster invitee. He hit .364 with two doubles, two steals, one walk and one strikeout in 11 at-bats this spring. Yu Darvish - Concern about WBC usage Padres manager Bob Melvin expressed concern Thursday about Darvish's lack of usage in the World Baseball Classic, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Impact Darvish was brought on in relief for Team Japan in Wednesday's win over Team Italy, and he has logged only five total innings so far in the WBC. Opening Day is just two weeks away, and the Padres are worried that the ace right-hander won't be fully built up out of the gate. Maybe he can be pushed a little longer in the next round(s) of the tournament to mitigate some of the frustration coming out of Padres camp. Japan is set to play a semifinal game Monday.

Impact Castillo has made just two appearances in the Cactus League this spring, and the last one was March 3. Given that Opening Day is now only two weeks away, the 27-year-old reliever seems likely to begin the 2023 regular season on the injured list.

The veteran left-hander appears to be healthy now, though, and has apparently surprised the team by how well he's been throwing. Hamels figures to stay in extended spring training for a while before joining a minor-league affiliate to make some starts.

Impact That's the positive angle to Honeywell's performance thus far in exhibition action. The negative is that he has surrendered 10 runs -- eight earned -- on 12 hits (three homers) for an ERA of 6.35. The 27-year-old former Rays prospect signed a split contract with the Padres over the winter ($725,000 in the majors, $200,000 in the minors) and will likely be ticketed for Triple-A El Paso to begin the 2023 campaign.

Blake Snell - Good results so far this spring Snell has pitched in two Cactus League contests for the Padres, allowing three runs on four hits while posting a 6:2 K:BB over seven innings.
Impact Snell has allowed just six baserunners through his first seven innings, but he's been stung by two long balls against him. Homers weren't a big problem for the lefty last season -- he gave up 11 over 128 frames -- so there's no reason to draw any implications from the small spring sample. Snell historically doesn't go deep into games and tends to issue too many walks, but he can pile up strikeouts and pitched well enough last season (3.38 ERA, 2.79 FIP, 1.20 WHIP) to justify a selection in the first third of fantasy drafts.

Impact Carpenter and Cruz are both newcomers to the Padres this season, and they form a natural platoon pair with the former being a left-handed batter and the latter batting from the right side of the plate. Carpenter has also been playing first base this spring, per Jack Magruder of MLB.com, so he figures to get additional at-bats by occasionally starting at that position. San Diego will be hoping that the veteran can recapture some of the magic that led Carpenter to a huge bounce-back campaign with the Yankees last season, when he slashed .305/.412/.727 with 15 homers and 37 RBI over just 154 plate appearances.

Trent Grisham - Uneven results at plate this spring Grisham is slashing .179/.273/.321 with a home run, a double, five RBI, six runs and a 4:8 BB:K through 11 Cactus League contests.
Impact Grisham began spring play in fine fashion, gathering three hits -- including his lone home run -- over his first four at-bats. He's been ice cold since then, going just 2-for-24. Though spring training stats don't count for much, San Diego surely would like to see Grisham build some positive momentum heading into the regular season after he struggled to a .184/.284/.341 slash line across 524 plate appearances last year. His Gold Glove defense ensures some amount of job security as the team's starting center fielder, but Grisham is a risky fantasy target given his offensive downturn last season.

Ha-Seong Kim - Headed back to Padres camp Kim will rejoin San Diego for spring training in Arizona with Korea eliminated from the World Baseball Classic, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Though Kim went just 3-for-16 during WBC play, all three of his hits left the park, and he tallied five runs along with six RBI. He also struck out just one time and walked twice. Kim should resume playing in Cactus League contests shortly as he prepares to open the regular season as the Padres' starting second baseman.
