Picks up win Monday Barlow (5-3) allowed a run on two hits in 1.2 innings, earning the win Monday over Houston.

Impact Barlow yielded a solo home run to Jason Castro in the ninth inning, but he was able to limit the damage there for a 7-6 Kansas City win. It was just the third homer Barlow has allowed in 57 innings this season. The right-hander has posted a strong 2.68 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 72:22 K:BB while adding six saves and 14 holds in a high-leverage role.

Impact Barlow wasn't great in this appearance, but all three runs that crossed the plate on his watch were inherited runners from Greg Holland. When Kansas City regained the lead after a rain delay in the ninth inning, Barlow ended up in line for the win. Through 52.2 innings, he's posted a 2.73 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 69:21 K:BB while adding six saves, 14 holds and three blown saves. The right-hander is likely to continue seeing high-leverage work despite allowing multiple baserunners in three of his last five appearances.

Impact The right-hander was called upon to pitch the eighth inning and remained in the game for the ninth. He allowed a ground-rule double to Yoan Moncada, who scored on Adam Engel's RBI single, but Barlow was able to induce a game-ending double play from Brian Goodwin to protect the lead. This was Barlow's second save in his last three appearances; he and Greg Holland seem to be manager Mike Matheny's favorites in Kansas City's closer committee for now. Barlow owns a 2.76 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 63:20 K:BB across 49 innings.

Impact He needed only 11 pitches (seven strikes) to carve through the bottom of Milwaukee's order. Barlow has three of his saves in July, and while he's also been charged with two blown saves this month, both came in set-up situations and not in the ninth inning. The Royals will likely continue to mix and match in the closer spot, but at the moment Barlow seems to be the top option as only Greg Holland has also picked up a save this month.

Second straight blown save Barlow allowed three runs on a hit and two walks with one strikeout in one inning, taking a blown save in Thursday's 7-4 loss to Cleveland.

Impact Barlow pitched the eighth inning, but he wasn't able to get through it without giving up a three-run home run to Cleveland catcher Roberto Perez. This was Barlow's second blown save in as many outings, although he avoided taking the loss as he did Wednesday versus Cincinnati. The right-hander has a 2.95 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 60:19 K:BB through 42.2 innings this season. With both Barlow and Greg Holland struggling recently, Josh Staumont or Kyle Zimmer could see more high-leverage work in Kansas City's closing committee.

Impact Barlow had the task to defend a three-run lead in the top of the ninth inning and while he allowed Jorge Polanco to snatch a one-out single, he closed things out by striking out Nick Gordon and inducing Nelson Cruz to a groundout. Barlow has gone 4-for-5 in save chances this season and also has 11 holds, but perhaps the most important thing to note going forward is that he's been given the ball in each of the last two games where the Royals have needed a save. However, the Royals still seem to be deploying a committee approach to closing duties and that could continue to limit the upside of all the relievers involved.
