Once the Mariners are confident that he's regained his timing at the plate and is in good physical condition, Upton could challenge for an everyday role at one of the corner-outfield spots. Aside from hotshot rookie Julio Rodriguez, the Mariners have gotten little offensive production this season from their other outfield and designated-hitter options.

Impact Torrens has a .467 OPS and 34 percent strikeout rate through 14 games in May and will head to the bench Sunday. Cal Raleigh will take over behind the plate and bat eighth.

Sam Haggerty - Joining big-league club Haggerty had his contract selected by the Mariners on Sunday.

Impact The 27-year-old lost his spot on Seattle's 40-man roster during the offseason and will now rejoin the major-league club. Haggerty played in 35 games for the Mariners last season and had a .538 OPS, but he's enjoyed a strong start to the 2022 campaign at Triple-A Tacoma with a .304/.378/.512 slash line, five home runs, 21 RBI and 13 stolen bases.

Impact The 24-year-old missed out on the Opening Day roster and appeared in three games for Tacoma before landing on the minor-league injured list, but he's now healthy and will join the major-league roster. Trammell made his MLB debut in 2021 and had a .160/.256/.359 slash line and 42.1 percent strikeout rate in 51 games, and he'll need to perform better this year if he's to retain a roster spot. Kyle Lewis (knee) is expected to return from the injured list Monday and Justin Upton, who signed with Seattle on Saturday, is set to join the team in the near future, so Trammell will likely have a short window to illustrate he should remain in the big leagues.

Impact After being released by the Angels on April 8, Upton remained unsigned to this point in the season. The Mariners are now signing him to their major-league roster, while they'll only be responsible for paying him about $550,000. Upton still possesses the ability to hit for power, launching 17 homers in 90 games last season, but his .211 average was a liability and the Angels elected to move on this spring. He'll likely alternate between the outfield and designated hitter with Seattle.
