Impact The 29-year-old lefty had a 10.17 ERA in 25.2 innings as a starter and a 7.20 ERA in five innings out of the bullpen, but he should return to the rotation in 2021. He logged a 4.21 ERA in 160.1 innings in 2019 and a 3.97 ERA in 154 innings in 2018.

Impact Matz would have been on schedule to start Wednesday against the Rays, but it will be Michael Wacha getting the nod in his place. Matz can't exactly claim he deserves a starting role at the moment, as he owns a 9.79 ERA on the year in six starts and one relief appearance. With just five days left in the season, it would be a surprise if he makes another start.

Struggles in return Matz allowed six runs on eight hits (two home runs) and three walks while striking out five across 2.2 innings Friday as he took the loss to the Braves.
Impact Friday was Matz's first time pitching since being activated from the injured list Sept. 13 and it was his first start since Aug. 15. The rust was clearly evident as he allowed eight hits (including two home runs) and three walks to the first 16 batters he faced. Matz's outing makes him the third consecutive Mets starter to fail to go at least three innings after both Jacob DeGrom (hamstring) and Seth Lugo were pulled before the third in their respective starts. The southpaw owns a 9.79 ERA to go along with a 30:9 K:BB across 26.2 innings this season. It's unclear if he'll get another turn in the rotation or if he'll shift back to the bullpen moving forward.
