Brandon Lowe - Shifts to 60-day ILThe Rays transferred Lowe (lower back) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Tuesday.
ImpactLowe hasn't played since May 15 due to a stress reaction in his lower back and only recently resumed taking batting practice a few days ago, so he wasn't guaranteed to make it back from the IL in fewer than 60 days anyway. The transaction now ensures that Lowe won't be activated until mid-July, and the Rays might prefer to hold out the 27-year-old through the All-Star break even if he's ready to go at the end of the 60-day period. Infielder Yu Chang, whom the Rays claimed off waivers from the Pirates on Tuesday, will take Lowe's spot on the 40-man roster.

Yu Chang - Scooped up by Tampa BayThe Rays claimed Chang off waivers from the Pirates on Tuesday.
ImpactTampa Bay shifted Brandon Lowe (back) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list to clear room on the 40-man roster for Chang, but the Rays will still have to move another player off the 26-man active roster when Chang reports to the team Tuesday. A right-handed hitter who's capable of playing all four infield positions, Chang could find himself in a short-side platoon role during his time in Tampa Bay.

Ji-Man Choi - Bows out of lineupChoi is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ImpactChoi typically finds himself on the bench against left-handed pitchers, but he'll take a seat Tuesday with a righty (Nick Pivetta) on the mound. Harold Ramirez will serve as the Rays' designated hitter and Isaac Paredes will man first base as Choi sits after going 3-for-13 with a solo home run, a double and a walk while starting in each of the previous three contests.

René Pinto - Sharing time with MejiaPinto will start at catcher and bat eighth in Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ImpactPinto will stick in the lineup for the fourth time in six games and looks as though he's carving out more work behind the plate than anticipated following his call-up from Triple-A Durham on June 10 to help replace injured backstop Mike Zunino (shoulder). At the very least, Pinto is part of a timeshare at catcher with Francisco Mejia, who isn't holding up to his reputation as a bat-first backstop by producing a .629 OPS on the season.

Francisco Mejía - Sits for fourth time in six gamesMejia is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ImpactThough Mejia will be sitting for the fourth time in six games, it's unclear if Rene Pinto has truly supplanted him on the depth chart at catcher. Just three days ago, Mejia supplied two home runs in a win over the Blue Jays, so the Rays likely won't completely pull the plug on him. Even so, Mejia -- who owns an unremarkable .629 OPS on the season -- may not have the massive workload behind the dish that some may have anticipated when No. 1 backstop Mike Zunino (shoulder) landed on the injured list June 10.

Kiké Hernández - Takes part in baserunningHernandez (hip) took part in baserunning work and picked up at-bats in batting practice Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ImpactHernandez's ability to run the bases may be the final hurdle he needs to clear in his recovery from a right hip strain before the Red Sox send him out on a minor-league rehab assignment later this week. Once he's reinstated from the 15-day injured list, Hernandez should take over as Boston's everyday center fielder, with Jarren Duran moving into a bench role as a result.

Garrett Whitlock - Faces hitters againWhitlock (hip) threw a live batting practice session Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ImpactAssuming Whitlock's inflamed right hip isn't bothering him too much coming out of the workout, he could be cleared to report to one of the Red Sox's minor-league affiliates this weekend to head out on a rehab assignment. Since manager Alex Cora has already confirmed that Whitlock will pitch out of the bullpen once activated from the 15-day injured list, the 26-year-old right-hander will likely only need one or two rehab appearances in the minors to get fully ramped up. Whitlock should operate as a multi-inning, high-leverage reliever for Boston, though both Tanner Houck and John Schreiber could rank ahead of him in the pecking order for save opportunities.
