Baker Mayfield - Shoulder surgery goes well Mayfield underwent a successful procedure Wednesday to repair the torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, Anthony Poisal of the Browns' official site reports.
Impact According to the report, the quarterback's recovery period is expected to fall in the 4-to-6 month range. Additionally, the Browns anticipate that Mayfield should be able to begin light throwing in April and participate in the team's offseason program on a limited basis. Beyond that, the expectation is Mayfield will be fully recovered for the start of training camp and enter 2022 as the Browns' starting signal-caller, per Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft is heading into the final year of his rookie contract, which is worth a fully guaranteed $18.86 million in 2022.

Impact Mayfield's outlook for 2022 would be more worrisome if the surgery was for his throwing arm. As is, Mayfield should be ready for training camp, if not the Browns' offseason program. He's scheduled to play out 2022 under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, and while the Browns reportedly plan to retain him as their starter, according to Rapoport, it's unclear if they'll seriously discuss an extension. Even after accounting for the injury that plagued him since Week 2, the past season was a clear step back from the year before, both for Mayfield personally and the Browns offense as a whole.

Impact The Browns acknowledged in a statement that they are aware of McDowell's arrest and are issuing no further comment at this time. A 2017 second-round pick of the Seahawks, McDowell didn't make his NFL debut until this season after he was involved in a serious ATV accident during his rookie year, and then was sentenced to 11 months of jail time in November 2019 following a series of crimes. After being released from jail, he resumed his career in May and signed with the Browns, defying the odds to not only make the team but also capturing a role in the defensive-line rotation. He finished his first NFL season with 33 tackles and three sacks in 15 games, but his latest off-field incident means that the Browns likely won't be re-signing the exclusive rights free agent this offseason.
