Chargers sign return specialist DeAndre Carter

The Los Angeles Chargers have signed wide receiver and return specialist DeAndre Carter to a one-year contract

Headed to LA Carter signed with the Chargers on Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Impact Carter recorded a career-best 24 receptions for 296 yards and three touchdowns in 2021 as a member of the Washington Commanders. Now joining a wide receiver corps that already boasts Keenan Allen and Mike Williams among others, Carter isn't likely to improve upon -- or perhaps even repeat -- those marks. However, his primary value will come from his work in the return game, as he has proven to be both a valuable kick and punt returner throughout his professional career.

Impact Carter bounced around from Houston to Philadelphia to Chicago from 2018-20, with this being just the second time he's spent the full season with one team. He even had a stretch as Washington's No. 2 receiver, which lasted about a month and a half before he moved back to a special-teams and reserve role over the final few weeks of the season. Carter is a late bloomer who made his first regular-season NFL appearance at 25, and he'll turn 29 in April about a month after he's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. If nothing else, Carter should draw interest as a return specialist and No. 4/5 receiver.

Three touches in loss Carter secured two of three targets for 12 yards while rushing once for 12 yards in Tuesday's 27-17 loss to Philadelphia.

Impact Carter has now had at least three targets in six of the last seven games, but he's totaled just 30 receiving yards across the last three weeks. He struggled with efficiency once again Tuesday with Garrett Gilbert under center and ranked seventh on the team in receiving yards. Across his last seven appearances, the 28-year-old has hauled in 17 of 30 targets for 201 yards and three touchdowns while rushing four times for 17 yards.

Washington-Eagles moved to Tuesday Carter and Washington will no longer play the Eagles on Sunday, after the NFL officially rescheduled the matchup between the two teams for Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.

Impact After a four-game stretch that saw Carter catch 12 of 20 targets for 171 yards and three touchdowns, the speedy wideout has only caught three passes for 18 yards over his last two games. The good news is that Carter saw five targets Sunday, his fifth game with at least five targets this season. However, the overall production wasn't there, as Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen both struggled to complete passes against Dallas' improved secondary. With Terry McLaurin in concussion protocols, Carter may be operating as the No. 1 wideout against the Eagles in Week 15.

Carter's likely done enough to keep the job for Week 14 against Dallas, but another quiet outing could have him looking over his shoulder at Samuel or third-round rookie Dyami Brown.
