Impact The writing seemed to be on the wall after Haskins' poor performance during Sunday's loss to the Panthers (154 passing yards, three turnovers) led to his being demoted to the No. 3 role for a second time this season, but it's nonetheless surprising to see a first-round pick receive such a short tenure. Just 20 months ago, Washington selected the Ohio State product 15th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. Haskins has started 16 games in his career, a sample size equivalent to a full season. In that span, he has just 2,804 passing yards, a 60 percent completion rate, 12 touchdowns versus 14 interceptions and 6.3 yards per attempt. Any team that claims Haskins off waivers would inherit his fully-guaranteed $4.3 million salary over the next two years.

Back to third-string gig Coach Ron Rivera said Monday that Taylor Heinicke, rather than Haskins, would start Week 17 if Alex Smith (calf) remains sidelined, Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic reports.
Impact Rivera pulled Haskins during Washington's final two drives of last Sunday's loss to Carolina, at which point the 2019 first-round pick had three turnovers, no touchdowns and only 154 passing yards. Heinicke managed to spark a bit of life into the Football Team's offense in limited action, throwing for 137 yards and a touchdown while avoiding any interceptions. A combination of off-field issues and lackluster play appears to have lost Haskins the trust of his coaching staff, and it seems unlikely he sees the field again this season.

Impact Haskins was pulled midway through the fourth quarter, as Washington desperately tried to recover from a 20-6 deficit. As could be implied from the score, Haskins struggled to get the offense moving. He also had three turnovers, one of which led directly to a touchdown for the Panthers. With the NFC East title on the line in a Week 17 matchup against Eagles, it seems unlikely that Haskins will be under center.
