Survives injury scare Waddle caught three of four targets for 21 yards while missing some snaps due to injury during Saturday's preseason win against the Falcons.

Impact With six wide receivers sitting for the Dolphins -- notably, DeVante Parker (undisclosed) and Will Fuller (foot) -- Waddle got the start and was targeted on three of Tua Tagovailoa's first four passes. On the 10th play of Miami's opening drive, though, Waddle was undercut by an Atlanta defender while blocking. The scary moment included the rookie first-round pick remaining on the field for awhile, going to the blue medical tent and eventually walking to the locker room under his own power, all the while in visible pain. However, he was able to come back to the sideline, test out his left leg with running and cutting and eventually rejoin the Dolphins offense on the field. It'll be interesting to see if he misses upcoming practices, but Waddle appears to have dodged a bullet during exhibition action.

Returns punt for 24 yards Waddle wasn't targeted in Saturday's preseason game against the Bears, but he did have a 24-yard punt return in the first quarter.

Impact Waddle worked with the first-team offense and got plenty of snaps alongside Tua Tagovailoa, who threw six of his 11 passes to tight ends. The rookie first-round pick at least got a chance to show off his talent on special teams, though he'll have tough competition for return work on a team with WR/RS Jakeem Grant. In any case, Waddle should see at least one or two targets in the second week of the preseason, even if one or two of the Dolphins' veteran wideouts (Will Fuller, DeVante Parker, Albert Wilson) is able to make it back on the field. Miami will host the Falcons on Aug. 21, before wrapping up the exhibition schedule Aug. 29 at Cincinnati.

Listed as backup for now Waddle is listed as a backup on the Dolphins' first depth chart of the season, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.

Impact Waddle is listed behind entrenched starters DeVante Parker and Will Fuller (suspension/foot) in addition to Albert Wilson, who opted out of the 2020 season. Wilson is an experienced slot playmaker who could certainly contribute on offense if he's retained his explosiveness heading into his age-29 season, but Waddle's status as a first-round pick should let him find his way into the starting lineup sooner rather than later. As Mark Inabinett of AL.com reports, Waddle recently said his surgically repaired right ankle feels "totally back to normal." Both Waddle and Wilson have drawn positive reviews through the early portion of training camp.

Still dealing with ankle problems? Waddle's surgically repaired right ankle is "still somewhat of an issue" nine months after the initial injury, according to PFN's Adam Beasley.

Impact The sixth overall pick dislocated his ankle last October and had surgery the same night, later making it back for a brief appearance in the national championship game where he caught three passes for 34 yards just two and a half months after suffering the injury. Despite the unusually quick return to action and subsequent early draft slot, Waddle reportedly still walks with a slight limp at times and has been tightly wrapping his right ankle before every practice. Then again, he's at least been practicing, while fellow Miami wideouts DeVante Parker (PUP - undisclosed), Preston Williams (PUP - foot) and Will Fuller (undisclosed) all were absent from Thursday's session. Waddle's ankle may continue to require some maintenance, but he did say he's feeling good and has been handling full workloads in practice, thus beginning to build his case for a top-three role right out of the gate. The Dolphins do have a deep group at wide receiver, however, so they can afford to rest Waddle at some point -- or ease him in with a limited role -- if the ankle becomes more of a problem.
