Rejoining K.C. backfield McKinnon is re-signing with the Chiefs on a one-year deal Monday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.

Impact McKinnon handled a prominent role on offense during Kansas City's playoff run last season, both as a runner and receiver, and he now rejoins Clyde Edwards-Helaire and free-agent addition Ronald Jones in the backfield. On 48 touches through three playoff games in 2021, McKinnon racked up 315 yards from scrimmage and one touchdown. The 30-year-old veteran's return could end up limiting Edwards-Helaire's upside in what may prove to be a more crowded backfield than fantasy managers would prefer.

Lead back in playoff loss McKinnon rushed 12 times for 65 yards and caught three of four targets for 30 yards in Sunday's 27-24 overtime loss to the Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.

Impact McKinnon was the leading backfield option for the Chiefs, mustering 95 yards from scrimmage on 15 touches compared to Clyde Edwards-Helaire's 40 total yards on seven touches. The 29-year-old McKinnon will be a free agent this offseason, but his strong postseason performance as both a rusher and a pass catcher should lead to a robust market for the running back, be it in Kansas City or elsewhere.

McKinnon maintained a prominent role as a receiver, and he's clearly the best backfield option through the air in the pass-heavy Chiefs offense ahead of what could be another high-scoring affair in the AFC Championship Game against the Bengals.
