Impact Walker served as a starter during Saturday's preseason opener since Rashaad Penny (groin) was kept off the field. Impact Rashaad Penny is dealing with a slight groin injury and will likely sit out Saturday's game, though he wasn't expected to play much even if he was healthy. Head coach Pete Carroll spent time Thursday raving about the rookie's abilities in the passing game, specifically as a pass blocker, which was a major question mark coming out of college. Walker will get a chance to prove himself in his first NFL action Saturday, and if he shows the necessary improvements in the passing game, he could have a chance to get on the field often when the games start to count. However, Penny's finish to the 2021 season should lock him in as the No. 1 back as long as he's healthy.

With Chris Carson planning to retire from the NFL because of a neck injury, Rashaad Penny and Walker top the Seahawks' running back depth chart, with Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic noting that the duo are in line to work as the team's primary early-down options. DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer are expected to share third-down duties. Though Walker has plenty of long-term upside, it may take him some time to become a steady fantasy producer, with ESPN's Brady Henderson indicating that Penny (who led the NFL in rushing over the final five weeks of last season) projects as Seattle's primary running back to begin the coming season.

Walker won the Doak Walker Award -- given to college football's best running back -- last season after he ran for 1,636 yards and 18 touchdowns over 12 games with Michigan State, and the Seahawks selected him in the second round (41st overall) of April's draft. While that pedigree projects well for Walker in the long term and for dynasty purposes, he has enough question marks as a pass catcher and pass blocker to cast doubt unto his ability to operate in a third-down role right away. Thus, it wouldn't be surprising if he ran behind Travis Homer or DeeJay Dallas to begin the year until he can refine his skills.
