AFC East could be wide open with Jets, Dolphins and Patriots looking to end Bills' 4-year reign

Jaylen Waddle - Still in non-contact jersey Waddle (undisclosed) is practicing in a red non-contact jersey Wednesday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

Impact Waddle has been managing an undisclosed minor injury since early August, so while it's encouraging to see him still taking some reps, fantasy managers are eager for the star playmaker to resume participating in full. The Dolphins are taking a cautious approach to Waddle's health, but with just 12 days remaining before the regular-season opener against Jacksonville on Sept. 8, next week seems like a reasonable target for Waddle to begin truly ramping up his workload. With Odell Beckham (undisclosed) and River Cracraft (upper body) both out at least the first four games of the season, Miami's depth chart is thin behind Waddle and Tyreek Hill (hand).

Cam Smith - Opening season on IR Smith (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve by the Dolphins on Tuesday.

Impact Smith is dealing with a hamstring injury and he'll open the season on injured reserve as a result. The cornerback will be forced to miss at least four games while on IR and he'll be eligible to return to the field in Week 5 versus the Patriots on Oct. 6.

Wyatt Ray - Placed on IR Ray (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve by the Dolphins on Tuesday.

Impact Ray signed with the Dolphins on Aug. 12, but he'll now be forced to miss the entirety of the 2024 campaign while on IR with an undisclosed injury. If Ray and Miami reach an injury settlement at any point, he'll be free to sign elsewhere and potentially play this season.

Impact Wynn is still working through a quadriceps injury he suffered in 2023 and he'll be forced to miss at least the first four games of the season. The offensive lineman will be first eligible to return in Week 5 when the Dolphins face the Patriots on the road Oct. 6.

Impact Chubb has been on the active/PUP list since camp opened as he continues to work his way back from an ACL tear suffered in Week 17 last season. His extended stay on the physically unable to perform list will force him to miss at least the first four games of the 2024 campaign, although it's not clear if he'll be healthy enough to return at that point.

He's been on active/PUP since the start of training camp, yet to practice with his new teammates this summer. Skylar Thompson - Beats out White for backup QB job Thompson has secured the backup quarterback job behind Tua Tagovailoa after the Dolphins released Mike White on Sunday, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Thompson operated as the Dolphins' emergency quarterback for all of 2023 while White was the backup behind Tagovailoa. It was an open competition for the No. 2 job between Thompson and White during the offseason and training camp, and the former won the battle by completing 35 of 61 passes for three touchdowns and two interceptions across three preseason games. Thompson was selected by the Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and he appeared in seven regular-season games in his rookie year, completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 534 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

Anthony Schwartz - Placed on injured reserve Schwartz (knee) was placed on the Dolphins' reserve/injured list Sunday.

Impact Schwartz injured his knee while being tackled on a 17-yard reception in Friday's preseason game against Tampa Bay. Tests later confirmed that Schwartz tore a ligament in his knee, and the 2021 third-round pick will now be forced to sit out for the entire 2024 season unless an injury settlement is reached with the Dolphins. Schwartz appeared in 11 regular-season games for the Browns last season, finishing with four catches on 10 targets for 51 yards while adding 57 rushing yards and a touchdown on four carries.
