Returning to Seattle Penny agreed to a one-year, $5.75 million contract with the Seahawks on Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Impact Penny's injury issues marred the first three seasons of his career, and he played only three games during the first half of 2021 due to a calf issue before breaking out down the stretch. The 26-year-old finished with 119 carries for 749 yards and six touchdowns as he flashed his first-round potential, leading to another year with the Seahawks. Chris Carson is expected to be ready for training camp after missing most of last season with a neck issue, and he and Penny figure to split Seattle's backfield work for 2022 if both can stay healthy.

Impact Penny's situation is unique and possibly unprecedented. After sitting behind Chris Carson (neck) to start his career before suffering a torn ACL in 2019, the 2018 first-round pick finally looked healthy down the stretch in 2022. The 26-year-old recorded 671 yards (7.3 YPC) and six rushing touchdowns over the final five games. Now, he'll be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins March 16. Gregg Bell of The News Tribune believes the Seahawks will prioritize re-signing safety Quandre Diggs and cornerback D.J. Reed before Penny given their clear weakness at defense. The Seahawks have nearly $35 million in salary-cap space heading into 2022, so there is room for all three of them, but it's unclear what type of contract Penny will command given his age. It's worth noting that Carson -- who is on the final year of a two-year, $10.43 million contract -- may be back from a neck injury for training camp, too.

Impact There wasn't any work to do as a pass catcher with Russell Wilson throwing only 26 pass attempts, but the red-hot running back did all the necessary damage on the ground. With this big game Penny posted 706 rushing yards (7.7 yards per carry) and six rushing touchdowns in the past five games, and drastically changed his public perception as he heads into free agency. The schedule was likely somewhat favorable, but rushing production this explosive has value, and Penny was almost this exact same player at San Diego State in college. His offseason will be worth monitoring.
