Adrian Peterson posts religious tweet in wake of child-injury charges

Published Sep. 14, 2014 3:42 p.m. ET

In the wake of accusations that he injured his son via spankings with a wooden switch, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson took to Twitter to post a passage of religious text with certain sentences highlighted in blue.

Peterson was deactivated for Sunday's game vs. the New England Patriots after being charged in the injury of one of his sons in an incident in May. The star running back was booked and released from a Houston-area jail Saturday. If convicted, Peterson could be sentenced to up to two years in prison and fined up to $10,000.

On Sunday, Peterson posted to Twitter around the same time the game he was missing was kicking off. It's the first such public post from Peterson since the news of the charges.

He didn't directly cite the case, but portions of the religiously themed tweet were underscored in blue highlighter:

The Vikings are completing their own fact-finding process before weighing in further on Peterson, according to ESPN.

"We are, as an organization, still in the process of gathering information, and at the end of the weekend we will discuss what we will do going forward," team general manager Rick Spielman said, according to ESPN's Sal Paolantonio. "You don't want to make any knee-jerk reactions. All options are on the table. You can't take any options off the table because we're still gathering information."

According to The Associated Press, Montgomery County (Texas) prosecutor Phil Grant says a grand jury backed the child abuse charge against Peterson after it spent several weeks reviewing "lots of evidence."

Grant said Saturday that parents are entitled to discipline their children, but that grand jury members felt Peterson went too far after they looked at the child's injuries.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
