Ravens' Steve Smith leaves comeback door slightly ajar

Published Dec. 24, 2015 2:01 p.m. ET

It's hard to imagine the final image of Steve Smith's 15-year career being him getting carried off the field with a torn Achilles tendon. The Baltimore Ravens receiver's latest comments sound like he is leaving the door open for a possible return next season.

When asked if he still plans to hang it up during an appearance on ESPN's His & Hers, Smith said he's still on course, but hedged just a tad.

Smith will turn 37 in May, but still was by far the Ravens' top threat on offense this season before his devastating injury. He finished the year with 46 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns in seven games.

Coming back from a torn Achilles is arduous process, but if anyone can do it, it's Smith. He does have one year remaining on his contract with the Ravens.

"At the end of the day, I’m not rushing to make any decisions. I'm on course with what I said at the beginning of the year, so I’m going to stay that course until me and my family decide.

"I’m going to rehab and kind of take this time that I have – and I got a lot of time now – take this time to kind of figure out what I want to do."
