Chargers' WR Keenan Allen: 'I was average' last season
Keenan Allen was none too pleased with his second act in the NFL.
The Chargers' receiver followed up a stellar rookie season with an underwhelming sophomore campaign. Then, the Cal product missed the final two games of 2014 with injuries.
“I was average," Allen told the team's official website. "From what I expect of myself, it was average.”
He fell short of Chargers fans' expectations, too. Allen abused defensive backs in 2013-14, tallying 1,046 receiving yards that year. He came almost 300 yards shy of that mark last year.
Allen is still only 23 years old. A sophomore slump isn't uncommon for players that age.
Still, he's working hard to show he can be the player San Diego drafted and not the one they saw last fall.
"My focus this offseason was just getting back to the basics," Allen said. "Focusing on fundamentals and doing what I do. It was tough being out (with injuries) at the end of last year when the guys were fighting, but everything happens for a reason."
New receivers Steve Johnson and Jacoby Jones are in the fold this season, but Allen should see ample time out wide. He was one of Philip Rivers' most reliable targets just two seasons ago.
