Garafolo: Kelly's bizarre news conference filled with lies

Published Mar. 12, 2015 12:08 a.m. ET

When an NFL coach takes to the podium after a bombshell trade, the point typically is to answer questions behind the logic of the trade. Who ever said Chip Kelly was logical?

A day after the Eagles head coach and new personnel chief shocked the NFL by trading starting quarterback Nick Foles to St. Louis for former No. 1 overall pick and oft-injured quarterback Sam Bradford, Kelly held a news conference geared at introducing Bradford to the Philadelphia media, and answering any and all questions about why he would make such a seemingly risky move.

Instead, the rather odd affair (you can see highlights of Kelly's news conference in the video above) was filled with mixed messages and condescending banter with the media, and ultimately left many with more questions than answers. And in the case of FOX Sports 1 NFL Insider Mike Garafolo, one undeniable truth:

Kelly is a bold-faced liar. Yeah, more on that nugget later.

Kelly began his time with the media by attempting to dispel the "crazy" idea that he is still looking to make another major deal to move up in the draft and select Heisman-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota, whom Kelly coached in college at Oregon.

"We will never mortgage our future to go all the way up to go get somebody like that because we have too many other holes that we're going to take care of."

But ... he prefaced that by stating: "Marcus is the best quarterback in the draft."

He added this little ditty:

"We didn't bring Sam here to be a (trade) chip. I'm the only Chip here."

But he also dropped this bombshell:

Confusing? Indeed.

Out of his mind? That remains to be seen. But for his part, FOX Sports 1 NFL Insider Peter Schrager says at the very least, Kelly has earned the chance to prove his approach works on the field.

Yeah, good luck convincing Eagles fans to wait another six months before rendering judgment. After all, Foles only followed All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy and leading receiver Jeremy Maclin out the door in the City of Brotherly Love this offseason.

And as for that whole bold-faced liar thing? Enjoy:
