The Browns make a lot of coaching changes, but the AFC North does not
The Cleveland Browns aren't exactly a model of stability in the NFL, and owner Jimmy Haslam has already cleaned house three times since taking over the team in 2012.
Since returning to Cleveland in 1999, the franchise has seen 24 starting quarterbacks, seven general managers and seven full-time head coaches. When compared to the other teams in the AFC North, the instability looks even worse.
The Steelers have had three head coaches since 1969, Marvin Lewis is the second-longest tenured coach in the NFL, and the Ravens have had eight straight seasons under John Harbaugh. Since Harbaugh was hired in 2008, the Browns have gone through an astounding five head coaches, with no one lasting more than two seasons. Romeo Crennel, who was given the ax after the 2008 campaign, lasted four years, the longest stint of any Browns coach since 1999.
Despite the owner's itchy trigger finger, Haslam believes the coaching vacancy is still an attractive one. What is seemingly a two-year leash is a tough sell to any prospective coaching candidate, but with only 32 such jobs, someone is going to be more than willing to take the plunge in trying to be the savior of the franchise.
"I still think it is an extremely attractive job. It is a great franchise, great fans and there is only one way to go with the franchise – 11 draft picks this year, two first-round picks really because we have the 32nd pick in the draft, some talented young players and we are totally committed to winning. Do I think it is easy? No, but do I think for the right person this is a great job? I absolutely do."
