Duce Staley: DeMarco Murray a perfect fit for Eagles' offensive scheme
At one point in time, Duce Stayley was the lead back for a pretty dynamic Philadelphia Eagles offense. Now, Staley serves as the running backs coach under head coach Chip Kelly. This offensive scheme is unique to the NFL, and it requires a specific style of running back. Staley believes that free agent addition DeMarco Murray is exactly what the offense is looking for.
"He's a perfect fit for us, exactly what we want to do," Staley said. "Downhill, full-steam ahead. That's what we're preaching every day: one, two, three, four yards and a cloud of dust. And all the backs we have, they're able to do that."
Murray has an upright running style and he excels at planting his foot and bursting up the field through the creases created by the offensive line. Murray showcased his potential in the Cowboys' offense in 2014 en route to a league-leading 1,845 rushing yards.
Murray has impressed Staley both on the field and in the meeting room.
"[Murray's] passion for the game, his leadership in the classroom, in the weight room, on the field, is second to none," Staley said. "And he's driven by that, he's driven by going out there and not making mistakes. He's driven by how he works. I'm just excited to have him."
Staley summed up the Eagles' goals for their running backs going forward in Kelly's system.
"At the end of the day these are downhill runners," Staley said. "They're gonna bring exactly what we want to the table, getting three or four yards and a cloud of dust. Hate to be redundant, but that's what we want and that's what these guys bring to the table."
On Wednesday, Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur hinted that Murray would split carries with fellow free agent acquisition Ryan Mathews. The true split is yet to be determined and you can be sure that both Staley and Kelly will have a say in the final workload share.
