Giants' Coughlin taking strict 'no brawl' policy during Bengals joint practices
The New York Giants have had two training-camp fights so far between four different offensive and defensive linemen. Head coach Tom Coughlin is very much against these brawls, and he made it known that he won't tolerate them during the Giants' joint practices with the Cincinnati Bengals this week.
“I heard about it. It’s already been addressed,” Coughlin said to reporters when asked about the Redskins-Texans brawl, per the New York Post. “[Bengals coach] Marvin [Lewis] and I have talked about that. We want good, solid work but we don’t want any of that.”
Coughlin expressed his displeasure last week when Justin Pugh and Damontre Moore got into a brawl. In the past, when Coughlin was coaching the Jaguars, he lost a key player to a broken hand during a training-camp brawl.
This is the first time that the Giants will be lining up and practicing against anyone other than their own teammates since December. The players have no intentions of defying Coughlin, but that doesn't mean it's going to be easy for them.
“It’s going to be real chippy because we’re not teammates,” Giants cornerback Trumaine McBride said. “Once you step on the field, you have to look at it like it’s a game. It’s going to be fiery, guys are going to be fired up. I’m going to look at it like it’s a preseason game.
“When you’re here practicing with your guys every day, certain things you can do, certain things you can’t do.”
The Giants will practice with the Bengals throughout the week in anticipation of Friday's preseason opener.
