Colts release OL Donald Thomas among early cuts

Three days after being activated from the physically unable to perform list, the Colts released veteran guard Donald Thomas on Monday, per the Indianapolis Star.

The 29-year-old Thomas, who signed a four-year, $14 million contract with the Colts in 2013, was unable healthy during his time in Indianapolis.

Thomas played two games with the Colts in 2013, before being lost for the season with a torn biceps and a torn quad suffered in the same game. He then re-tore his quad early in training last year, missing the entire season.

The Colts elected to part ways with Thomas despite depth issues at left guard behind starter Lance Louis. Backup, Hugh Thornton, injured his knee in practice on Aug. 19 and is considered "week-to-week," according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

Also cut were guard Harland Gunn, linebackers Zach Hodges and Nicklas Haag, wide receivers Ezell Ruffin and Ryan Lankford, defensive tackle Jeris Pendleton, tight end Justin Sinz, running back Abou Toure, offensive tackle Tyler Hoover and center Brandon Vitabile.

Cornerback Tevin Mitchell was placed injured reserve, while another corner, Donald Celiscar was waived-injured. If no other team claims Celiscar, he'll revert to the Colts' IR list.
