New York Giants add WR James Jones to crowded receiver corps

The Giants have added depth to their already-crowded receiving corps, coming to terms with free agent James Jones, according to a report.

Jones will sign a one-year contract with the Giants, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, who reported that four other teams were interested.

Jones has experience playing in an offense very similar to the one Giants coordinator Ben McAdoo is running. The duo was in Green Bay from 2007 to 2013.

Jones' familiarity with the offense and his opinion of both McAdoo and head coach Tom Coughlin likely played a major role in his decision to choose the Giants over other potential suitors.

Although both Victor Cruz and Odell Beckham Jr. have avoided the physically unable to perform list, Jones will add depth if more injuries hit.

One question is whether the signing will have a negative impact on promising second-year wide receiver Corey Washington. During the Giants' spring practices, he had the opportunity to work with the first-team offense and Eli Manning. Several beat writers spoke glowingly of his presence in red zone drills.

Jones is entering his age-31 season after a year in Oakland during which his yards per catch dropped below 10 for the first time in his career.

He finished the 2014 season with a career-high 73 catches, but they went for just 666 yards and six touchdowns.
