Giants' co-owner hints Tom Coughlin and Jerry Reese need to win now
It's not the first time that New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has been under fire from the media. Mixed in with two Super Bowl championships have been several seasons that have ended before the middle of January. With the Giants sitting at 5-6, co-owner Steve Tisch is growing frustrated, and he recently put both Coughlin and general manager Jerry Reese on notice.
“It’s been a very frustrating season,” Tisch said at the NFL owners meetings, per The New York Post. “We’re still in it, for sure, but that’s more of a statement of how unique the NFC East is.”
After going toe to toe with the New England Patriots, the Giants came out flat against the Washington Redskins in a pivotal game for the NFC East in Week 12. It took the Giants nearly 50 minutes to score their first point. It's this kind of inconsistency that Tisch has seen in recent seasons with the Giants and again in 2015.
“Under Coach Coughlin, we’re fighters,” Tisch said. “[But] sometimes we fight harder than the previous week. We’ve got to stay focused and go out there as a team.”
With five games remaining, the Giants have an opportunity to change Tisch's mind, but it's going to have to start this Sunday and continue through Week 17.
“We have five games left, and all five games are important,” Tisch said. “There’s not a lot of margin for error.”
If the Giants fail to make the postseason, for a fourth consecutive season, Tisch stopped short of guaranteeing that either Coughlin or Reese would be back in 2016.
“The next five games are important for everybody,” Tisch said. “[The fate of] Jerry and Tom is not a discussion to have today, but I certainly don’t want to disappoint our fans as we get into the last month of Giants football.”
The Giants have remaining games against the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles. Three of those five teams currently have a winning record and one is undefeated.
“I would not be happy with our season ending on Jan. 3,” Tisch said.
