Eagles quarterbacks coach says Carson Wentz is 'further along' than expected
Few people have spent more time with Carson Wentz in the last month than Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo. He's worked with Wentz throughout OTAs and rookie minicamp, and has dissected his game more than anyone in the organization. So when it comes to the rookie's progress, there probably isn't a man more knowledgeable than DeFilippo.
Wentz has received high praise from the likes of head coach Doug Pederson, despite him endorsing Sam Bradford as the starter. But DeFilippo expanded on the rookie quarterback's development thus far, saying he's actually more prepared than expected.
The biggest question regarding Wentz's game out of college was his ability to adjust to the speed of the NFL after coming from the FCS and playing against lesser competition at North Dakota State. Suffice it to say, this is good news for the rookie, and for the Eagles as a team. What was never questioned about Wentz in college was his size, physicality and arm talent.
There's been nothing to change the Eagles' thoughts on those aspects of Wentz's game, which was to be expected.
In very little time, Wentz has given Bradford some serious competition at quarterback. While he still hasn't been declared a threat to Bradford's job by Pederson, there's little to indicate the opposite. When training camp opens, he's going to put a great deal of pressure on Bradford, and could very well pass him on the depth chart in 2016.
