Report: Eagles offered James Jones a contract before he signed with Giants

On Thursday evening, free agent wide receiver James Jones signed with the New York Giants. According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Eagles made him an offer before he decided to move forward with the Giants.

The Eagles were one of five total teams to offer Jones a contract. Jones reportedly choose the Giants due to his familiarity with Giants offensive coordinator Ben Mcadoo and his offensive scheme.

It's a little surprising that the Eagles targeted Jones. They currently have 12 wide receivers under contract, and they have logjam at the top of the draft chart. After shoe-in starter Jordan Matthews, a slew of talented receivers will compete for the Eagles' next five or six spots--assuming they roll with six or seven total wide receivers.

Also, by adding another veteran wide receiver to the mix, it creates another hurdle for talented rookie Nelson Agholor. In the end, Jones' decision to skip over the Eagles for their division rival will likely work out in favor of both sides.
