RG3 on Redskins: 'What happened there would break a lot of people'
Robert Griffin III signed a two-year contract with the Cleveland Browns on Thursday, kicking off what he's hoping to be a better-fated second act of his NFL career than the nightmare he experienced in Washington.
Taking over at quarterback in Cleveland is a titanic, yet-to-be-surmounted undertaking, but that doesn't matter to him right now.
For Griffin, all that matters is that he is the hell out of Washington.
Speaking on a conference call to CSN-Midatlantic's JP Finley and the assorted press on Thursday, Griffin briefly opened up about what it was like for him playing for the Redskins. Turns out, maybe even worse than we thought:
"What happened there would break a lot of people," Griffin said.
Well then.
This isn't exactly the ideal language you'd like hear from someone describing their last job, but it's not exactly unexpected either. Over the course of his time in Washington, Griffin suffered career-threatening injuries and found himself wedged in between coaches and the front office in neverending, passive-aggressive Cold War.
So it makes sense that even now, with the unenviable task of being a football-thrower in Cleveland, Griffin is just happy for the opportunity.
"After not playing football for a year I'm real appreciative of the Browns," Griffin said. "I'm real excited about that."
He's also cool with playing mentor, should Cleveland spring for a quarterback in the draft.
"If they draft a quarterback, I'll take the guy under my wing," Griffin said. "I've been through a lot more than a lot of guys go through their entire career."
As long as he doesn't have to go back to Gruden. Just don't make him go back there.
