Saints, Drew Brees reportedly resume contract extension talks
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees said in July that he hadn’t heard from his team in months regarding a new contract, but that appears to be changing with Brees’ start-of-the-season deadline to get an extension worked out rapidly approaching.
According to CBSSports.com, Brees – who is entering the final season of his five-year, $100 million contract – and the Saints have picked up negotiations ahead of the team’s Sunday season opener against the Oakland Raiders.
Brees, 37, is a nine-time Pro Bowl selection who has shown little to no signs of decline despite the roster around him becoming weaker in recent years. The Saints are in rebuilding mode, so there had been some question whether they would aggressively pursue a long-term deal with their best player, but it appears they are at least giving it one more try before Brees would hit the open market at the end of the season.
