The Chargers add familiar names to their 2016 coaching staff

Published Jan. 17, 2016 11:57 p.m. ET

Ken Whisenhunt isn't the only familiar assistant who'll rejoin the 2016 Chargers.

The team announced Craig Aukerman (special teams), Shane Steichen (quarterbacks coach), and Nick Sirianni (wide receivers) will all be back in new roles under head coach Mike McCoy. All three served as assistants San Diego in 2014.

The Chargers also hired former Titans defensive line coach Giff Smith for the same position.

Sirianni served as quarterbacks coach last season. At 34, he's considered one of the league's more promising young assistants.

All four moves leave the team with only one remaining opening -- a tight ends coach. McCoy might wait to hear from veteran Antonio Gates before deciding on a replacement for Pete Metzelaars, though.
