Irvin to Seahawks after option declined: 'F*** THAT OPTION!'
Bruce Irvin may want to take a break from Twitter for a while. Or at the very least take a breath or two before hitting send.
After twice landing in hot water with social media in April, the Seattle linebacker raised the bar in the early days of May late Sunday night, and this time, his target was his team. Or perhaps more accurately, his soon-to-be former team.
Over the weekend, the club informed Irvin that it will not be picking up the fifth-year option on his contract. This was his answer:
Bray is Irvin's son Brayden.
Irvin was the Seahawks’ first-round pick in 2012. He has been a key pass rusher while their defense continues to dominate, recording 16.5 sacks in three seasons. The one-year option on his contract would have resulted in a $7.75 million salary in 2016. Instead, he will make roughly $1.5 million this coming season and then become an unrestricted free agent.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll recently said he expects Irvin to be in Seattle for a long time, so the club must be holding out hope it can bring him back at a more team-friendly price in the long term, especially after signing linebacker K.J. Wright to a four-year, $27 million extension back in December. Pro Bowler Bobby Wagner is also entering the last season of his rookie contract.
Irvin later softened his stance, though he did not delete the initial tweet.
I am a Seahawk! #12thman

If the Seahawks are planning to let Irvin walk, you can understand why he would be upset. If they want to offer him more long-term security, he should be fine with the option not being picked up.
Then again, Irvin has shown us in the past that he can be very sensitive . . . and at times insensitive.
On April 1, Irvin decided to celebrate April Fool’s Day by tweeting a joke about drinking and driving. As you can imagine, that didn't go over very well.
And this past weekend, while watching the NFL Draft and listening to analysts compare other players to him, Irvin once again vented on Twitter, this time toward two analysts.
Stay tuned for the latest development. Or just keep an eye on Irvin's Twitter feed.
