Kirk Cousins' contract talks have stalled, but don't panic yet
Is Kirk Cousins on his way out of Washington, D.C.? Is his time with the Redskins at an end?
Just stop.
A report broke on Tuesday that contract negotiations between the team and the quarterback have hit a snag, and no more talks have been scheduled. However, that doesn't really mean much this early in the process. Talks often break down between a player and a team, only to pick back up at later date.
The Redskins are also likely to use the franchise tag on Cousins if a deal can't get hammered out. The quarterback is popular with the coaching staff — especially head coach Jay Gruden — and is coming off a banner year. He started all 16 games for the Redskins in 2015 and threw for 4,166 yards with 29 touchdown tosses. He also completed almost 70 percent of his passes.
Now, does that mean one season of success will bring Cousins the type of long-term deal he's looking for? Well, that remains to be seen. However, if the Redskins do tag him, he will earn somewhere in the $20 million range for 2016.
That's a nice chunk of change to hold him over.
