Scores in first start Sermon rushed 10 times for 31 yards and a touchdown while catching two passes for three yards in Sunday's 30-28 loss to the Packers.

Impact Sermon got the nod as starter as expected after Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) was pronounced out for the contest. The 49ers' third-round selection from this year's draft finished with a decent fantasy line thanks to his touchdown scamper, but the 3.1 yards per carry failed to impress. In the rookie's defense, the 49ers were playing from behind for most of the contest and relied upon their passing game to lead a comeback that fell just short. Perhaps Sermon could perform better in a more traditional game script. Whether or not we get a chance to see that is currently undetermined, as Mitchell could end up returning for the Week 4 matchup against the Seahawks. If the latter is unable to come back from injury, then Sermon should receive the lion's share of backfield touches like he did against the Packers.

Sermon will have to complete the NFL's protocol for head injuries to make himself available Week 3 against the Packers, but he appears to be the best bet of the 49ers' regular running backs to be active Sunday. With Raheem Mostert (knee) on IR, JaMycal Hasty out several weeks due to a high ankle sprain, and Elijah Mitchell working his way through a shoulder stinger, Sermon may be in line for his first career start this weekend. Sermon and the other three aside, San Francisco has emergency options lined up in Trenton Cannon and Jacques Patrick -- both are on the active roster -- while Kerryon Johnson and Chris Thompson are candidates to be elevated from the practice squad.

Meanwhile, fellow rookie sixth-rounder Elijah Mitchell is tending to a shoulder injury that Shanahan described as "worse than a stinger," according to David Lombardi of The Athletic. Sermon will need to pass all five phases of the protocol for head injuries to suit up Sunday night against the Packers, but with so many unknowns in San Francisco's backfield it's unclear how the RB work will break down. It didn't go well at all, with the rookie third-rounder taking an elbow to the helmet, fumbling in the process. Now that he's in the concussion protocol, there's no telling when he'll be cleared for game action. Impact Coach Kyle Shanahan made Sermon a healthy scratch in the team's season opener, leaving Mostert, JaMycal Hasty and rookie sixth-rounder Elijah Mitchell is the available running backs. After Mostert went down with a knee injury in the first half, Mitchell was the player to profit most, taking 19 carries for 104 yards and one touchdown.
