Maxim Tsyplakov - Bags powerplay goal Tsyplakov bagged a goal (on three shots) and added an assist in Friday's 5-2 preseason win over the Rangers.

Impact Tsyplakov was outstanding in the powerplay, as both of his goal contributions in this "Battle of New York" came with the man advantage -- he set up Bo Horvat's goal in the final minutes of the first period and later gave the Isles the lead with less than a minute to go in the second frame. Tsyplakov had 31 goals and 47 points in 63 regular-season contests with the KHL's Moscow Spartak in 2023-24, and based on what he's shown in the preseason, he's expected to have a role as a top-six forward for the Isles once they begin their regular-season play against Utah on Oct. 10.

Anthony Duclair - Notches three points Friday Duclair recorded one goal (on four shots) and two assists in Friday's 5-2 preseason win over the Rangers.

Impact Duclair closed out the scoring in the final stages of the third period, but he also had a hand in the Isles' third and fourth goals by setting up Maxim Tsyplakov's powerplay goal and Matthew Barzal's strike. Duclair signed a four-year, $14 million contract with the Islanders in free agency, so he figures to play a prominent role on offense as a top-six forward.

Impact Barzal showed he's more than ready to start the regular season with his impressive display, as he was involved directly in each of the team's five goals in this rivalry matchup, setting up Bo Horvat (twice), Anrhony Duclair and Maxim Tsyplakov while also blasting a goal of his own in the dying stages of the third period. Barzal is coming off an impressive 2023-24 season where he came up just five points shy of tying his career-best mark, but he still finished with 80 points (23 goals, 57 assists) across 80 regular-season appearances while adding two goals and three helpers in five postseason outings.

Semyon Varlamov - Gives up two early goals Varlamov allowed two goals on 22 shots in Friday's 5-2 preseason win over the Rangers.

Impact Varlamov was unfortunate to give up the first goal to Jonny Brodzinski, as his save went up and deflected off his back to find the back of the net. However, he settled down after giving up two first-period goals and looked solid the rest of the way. The Russian netminder could be in line to start Opening Night at home versus Utah on Oct. 10 since Ilya Sorokin (back) has not seen any preseason action yet.

Hudson Fasching - Missing preseason finale Fasching (lower body) won't play in Friday's preseason game versus the Rangers, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

Impact Fasching has been out for a week due to the lower-body issue. The 29-year-old may begin the season on injured reserve if he remains hurt, or he could be waived for demotion to AHL Bridgeport if he's healthy by the time 23-man rosters are submitted next week.

Impact Pulock was held out due to illness for much of this week, but he'll be able to check in for the Islanders' last preseason game. The gritty defenseman is likely to see top-four minutes to begin the 2024-25 campaign, starting with Thursday's home opener versus Utah.

Semyon Varlamov - Facing Rangers Varlamov will be between the home pipes against the Rangers on Friday, per Andrew Gross of Newsday.

Impact Coach Patrick Roy said the plan was for Varlamov to play the whole game Friday. The netminder could be in line to start Opening Night at home versus Utah on Oct. 10 as Ilya Sorokin (back) has not seen any preseason action. Varlamov was 14-8-4 with a 2.60 GAA and a .918 save percentage in 28 regular-season contests in 2023-24.

Ilya Sorokin - Remains day-to-day Per Andrew Gross of Newsday, coach Patrick Roy said Thursday, that he is taking it one day at a time with Sorokin (back surgery).

Impact Roy would not say whether or not Sorokin will play in the Islanders' final exhibition game Friday. Sorokin was warming up and partaking in Thursday's practice, the first time in training camp that Sorokin has done so this season. Sorokin had a tough 2023-24 campaign, registering a 25-19-12 record, with a 3.01 GAA and a .908 save percentage, his worst campaign in four NHL seasons. Should Sorokin not be ready for Opening Night on Oct. 10 versus Utah, look for Semyon Varlamov to get the start.
