Jan Rutta - Chips in with assist Rutta logged an assist and blocked six shots in Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blues.
Impact Rutta is more of a shutdown defenseman, but he's likely to fill a top-four role this season, so he could still make an impact on offense. The 34-year-old blueliner had 19 points in 69 appearances in 2023-24, his highest total since 2017-18. Rutta also had a minus-21 rating in his first year with the Sharks, and that's an area that will be difficult for him to improve as the team remains in its rebuilding phase.

Jake Walman - Earns helper in overtime loss Walman notched an assist and blocked seven shots in Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blues.
Impact Walman had the secondary helper on Macklin Celebrini's first NHL goal. The 28-year-old Walman is set to play in a much larger role than he's ever had in the NHL -- he opened the campaign on the top pairing and first power-play unit. Walman had a career-high 21 points, including four on the power play, over 63 contests with the Red Wings last year before he was traded in a salary dump to San Jose in June. While he's poised for a career year, the move to the Sharks will likely saddle him with an ugly plus-minus rating.

Mikael Granlund - Collects assist Thursday Granlund notched an assist, four shots on goal and two hits in Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blues.
Impact Granlund opened the season alongside Will Smith on the second line. A natural center, Granlund won nine of his 10 faceoffs, while Smith won just one of 11 draws, so it's likely the two forwards will split the center duties when they're playing together. Last year, Granlund was a pleasant surprise with 60 points in 69 contests, reaching that milestone mark for just the fourth time in his career. The Finn should be a regular in the top six and on the power play throughout 2024-25.

William Eklund - Picks up helper Eklund notched an assist, two shots on goal and two blocked shots in Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blues.
Impact Eklund set up Macklin Celebrini's opening tally at 7:01 of the first period, a sight Sharks fans will hope is repeated frequently over the next few years. The 21-year-old Eklund took a big step forward last season with 16 goals and 29 assists in 80 games, but he also had a minus-45 rating while seeing big minutes on a bad team. Eklund stands to benefit from the Sharks' forward additions -- he opened the year on a line with first-overall pick Celebrini and free-agent signing Tyler Toffoli.

Barclay Goodrow - Scores shortie in overtime loss Goodrow scored a shorthanded goal on two shots and added three hits in Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blues.
Impact Goodrow capitalized on a misplay by the Blues, tallying the Sharks' fourth and final goal at 17:37 of the second period. The 31-year-old was waived by the Rangers in June and scooped up by the Sharks -- the team he began his career with back in 2014-15. His 12 points in 80 regular-season games last year represented his lowest output over the course of a full campaign. He may be more productive in 2024-25, but Goodrow is more likely to chip in hits and PIM than points on a regular basis.

Fabian Zetterlund - Strikes on power play Zetterlund scored a power-play goal on three shots in Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blues.
Impact Zetterlund stretched the Sharks' lead to 3-1 in the second period. The 25-year-old winger broke out to the tune of 24 goals and 44 points in 82 games last season, and he added 204 shots on net and 120 hits to provide some fantasy category coverage. He'll likely see a smaller role after the Sharks added a handful of forwards to fill top-six jobs, but Zetterlund represents a decent depth option for fantasy managers if he can replicate last year's production.

Tyler Toffoli - Two points in team debut Toffoli scored a goal on four shots, added a power-play assist, levied two hits and blocked two shots in Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blues.
Impact Toffoli's goal gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead late in the first period, and he also helped out on a Fabian Zetterlund power-play goal in the second. After signing a four-year deal with San Jose on July 1, Toffoli will put his journeyman stretch on pause to play the role of a veteran leader on a young and rebuilding team. Last year, the winger had 55 points (33 goals, 22 assists) over 79 regular-season contests between the Devils and Jets. That's a reasonable level of production for him to aim for in 2024-25, though the supporting cast around him could make things challenging.

Macklin Celebrini - Wastes no time in debut Celebrini scored a goal on two shots and added an assist in Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blues.
Impact Celebrini's first period of NHL play went about as well as it could. He scored on his first shot, opening the scoring at 7:01 of the first period. Just over 10 minutes later, he set up Tyler Toffoli's goal, securing a multi-point debut for Celebrini. The No. 1 overall pick from 2024 will have every opportunity to put up big numbers as the new centerpiece of the Sharks' offense. Fantasy managers who can stomach a plus-minus rating that's likely to be in the red should not hesitate to deploy Celebrini on a regular basis.

The big takeaway from Opening Night in San Jose is the 40 shots against -- Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek figure to face a lot of rubber behind a lackluster defense this year. In leagues that value saves, that will be a plus, but Blackwood's ratios are going to be unappealing for the majority of fantasy managers, and wins will be hard to come by as well.
