Klim Kostin - Strikes on power play Kostin scored a power-play goal on three shots in Friday's 3-2 preseason shootout loss to the Ducks.

Impact A Will Smith attempt went off the boards, and Kostin was there to clean up the loose change. With three points, including two power-play goals, over three preseason games, Kostin is a candidate to fill a versatile role in 2024-25. He will likely begin the season in a bottom-six role, but if he makes the most of his opportunities, he could find his way back to the second-line spot that saw him produce 10 points over his last 19 games of 2023-24.

Vitek Vanecek - Takes shootout loss Vanecek allowed two goals on 42 shots in Friday's 3-2 preseason shootout loss to the Ducks.

Impact Vanecek was pelted with pucks but stood his ground fairly well. Over two preseason appearances, Vanecek surrendered three goals on 54 shots, a better mark than Mackenzie Blackwood, who gave up five goals on 43 shots. Yaroslav Askarov will begin the season with AHL San Jose, but any struggles by Vanecek or Blackwood could prompt the Sharks to change the mix in the NHL crease. Beyond that, Vanecek and Blackwood figure to have a fairly even split of the starts early on, though neither is a particularly strong fantasy option since the Sharks are projected to have another tough season.

Vitek Vanecek - Starting Friday Vanecek was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate, per Max Miller of NHL.com, indicating he will get the home start versus Anaheim on Friday.

Impact Vanecek is battling Mackenzie Blackwood for the No. 1 job in San Jose, as rookie sensation Yaroslav Askarov was sent to the AHL on Friday. Vanecek struggled with the Devils last season, going 17-9-3 with a 3.18 GAA and an .890 save percentage in 32 regular-season appearances. He was sensational two seasons ago, registering a 33-11-4 record with a 2.45 GAA and a .911 save percentage. Vanecek is likely somewhere in between this season, although playing for lowly San Jose, could hurt his fantasy value.

Yaroslav Askarov - Shipped down to minors Askarov (lower body) was demoted to AHL San Jose on Friday.

Impact When Askarov was acquired by San Jose in a trade from Nashville during the offseason, there was speculation that he would supplant Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek as the No. 1 option between the pipes for the Sharks. Instead, the 22-year-old Askarov has been sent down to the minors to open the season, perhaps in part due to the lower-body injury that limited him during training camp. Even with the demotion, it seems unlikely this will be the last time Askarov graces the NHL roster this year.

Impact Celebrini might still be fine for next Thursday's Opening Night against St. Louis. The 2024 NHL Draft's No. 1 overall pick is going into the season as a likely contender for the Calder Trophy, and the rebuilding Sharks are expected to lean on him heavily. Connor Bedard averaged 19:47 of ice time, including 3:22 with the man advantage, as a rookie with Chicago last season, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Celebrini receive a similar workload with San Jose.

Impact Celebrini's status as day-to-day should bring a collective sigh of relief to Sharks fans after the 18-year-old rookie was forced to leave Tuesday's matchup with Utah early. At this point, it seems likely the team will take a cautious approach with it's prized, No. 1 overall wunderkind, so fantasy players should probably consider him unlikely to play ahead of preseason matchups with Anaheim and Vegas on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Barring any setbacks, Celebrini remains poised to fill the first-line center role for Opening Night against the Blues on Oct. 10.

Impact White has made NHL appearances in each of the last eight seasons, but he signed an AHL contract with San Jose in mid-August. While he'll provide a veteran presence for the AHL club to begin the year, it's unclear whether he'll land an NHL deal at some point.

Impact Sabourin has appeared in just 46 regular-season contests for Ottawa, Toronto and San Jose despite having made the jump to the professional ranks back in 2014-15. At this point, the veteran winger figures to serve primarily in a leadership role with the Barracuda, though he could be called up from the minors if needed.

Impact Benning opened the scoring at 12:33 of the second period, but the Sharks couldn't get that lead to the intermission. The 30-year-old defenseman is not guaranteed a spot on the Opening Night roster, but he could carve out a role as an extra blueliner. Benning's path to making the roster could be easier if Marc-Edouard Vlasic (upper body) and Shakir Mukhamadullin (lower body) require stints on injured reserve to begin the season.

Regardless of who emerges as the starter, fantasy managers in most formats can wait to see how the team performs before taking a chance on a San Jose goalie.
