FOX NASCAR QUOTES:
MIKE JOY SAYS ALEX BOWMAN HAS COME A LONG WAY IN HIS CAREER
“Five years ago, Alex Bowman was a young journeyman driver dreaming of making it in the Cup Series, thinking the call from a top team owner would never come. Well, fate and circumstances played into his hands, and now he is a two-time winner in the Cup Series.”
JEFF GORDON SAYS SUNDAY’S WIN COULD BE A CONFIDENCE BOOST FOR BOWMAN
“This is really going to build Alex Bowman’s confidence, as well as his stock in the sport. This is a guy who has had a real up and down career. He was really successful early on in some open wheel cars, had a bad injury he had to recover from and then was working his way back to the Cup Series – his dream – but never got that call, that quality ride. Then all of a sudden, Dale Earnhardt Jr. said, ‘Someone needs to give this guy a shot.’ Rick Hendrick gave him that opportunity and here he is with two wins under his belt in the last year-and-a-half in the Cup Series. The way I see it, the way this team is running right now, many more to come.”
LARRY MCREYNOLDS THINKS SUNDAY’S WIN COULD BE THE BEGINNING OF MULTIPLE WINS FOR BOWMAN
“I see the possibility of him winning more races this year. His two wins have come at worn-out tracks – Chicagoland Speedway last year and now Auto Club Speedway. I think about the next mile-and-a-half tracks — worn-out Atlanta Motor Speedway and Homestead, so it could happen soon.”
JAMIE MCMURRAY WILL BE WATCHING ALEX BOWMAN AND RYAN BLANEY AT PHOENIX
“I think Alex Bowman and Ryan Blaney will be two of the guys you have to beat to win the race this weekend. Those guys are going to be able to win at about any type of track – a road course, a short track, whatever.”
MCMURRAY CREDITS A TEAM EFFORT FOR BOWMAN’S SUCCESS
“It takes everything to win at this level. The best example was Las Vegas. We saw Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin — guys who won multiple races last year — their cars aren’t there this year. They struggled. So, it takes every one of those things – driver, crew chief and manufacturer — to work. Clearly, the new Chevy body is a huge improvement for that camp.”
MCMURRAY ACKNOWLEDGES FRUSTRATION WITHIN THE JOE GIBBS RACING CAMP THIS SEASON
“The one thing I heard all the Gibbs drivers say was they felt like their cars were really slow on the straightaway, which sounds like they have a lot of drag to make them handle well. I think they’ll get that figured out. We’re going to Phoenix this weekend, which is a different rules package. Drag isn’t going to matter. It’s about how much downforce you can put in the car, and this weekend could turn their season around. They’ll get the other part figured out soon enough.”
