JIMMY JOHNSON’S ONE-ON-ONE WITH PETE CARROLL
Carroll: “Hey Coach, what’s up? How you doing?”
Johnson: I’m doing good and I think you’re doing better.
Carroll: “I don’t know. You’re in a pretty good setting [Florida] right there. That looks beautiful.”
Johnson: We were actually going to do this from the boat, but we got Seattle weather here in the Keys.
Carroll: “I was kinda hoping we were going to be on the boat, but that’s OK. We’ll take it. It looks beautiful.”
Johnson: Pete, you know we go way back and you’ve been a consistent winner everywhere but your early teams, they were strong on defense and now, you’re wide open on offense. What made the change as far as, as they say “letting Russ (Russell Wilson) cook”?
Carroll: “You gotta go with whatever you got. We’ve always tried to play great defense. This season is long from being over. We have done a really good job offensively but that’s going to be hard to keep that going too. We’re going to need our defense to come through. This is what’s happened so far.”
Johnson: Russell Wilson, he’s playing at a MVP level. He says he can play a lot better. Just how special is he?
Carroll: “Jimmy, I don’t know. The guys you’ve been around – you’ve been around great players. I’ve never been around anybody that’s so consistently dedicated to being the very best. The amazing thing is the consistency from the day he walked in here, he’s never changed. He’s never backed off. He’s never taken a moment where you don’t see him focused, tuned in. That is what drives everything about him. That heart and that drive is so extraordinary and so world-class. He’s just relentless about being great.”
Johnson: You’re probably one of the most enthusiastic, energetic guys in the entire NFL. What’s your secret?
Carroll: “I don’t know, Jimmy. I’ve been doing this for so long and been doing it the same way. It’s just habit. I love what I’m doing. I have so much fun.”
Johnson: How much longer can you do this? (coaching)
Carroll: “I’m not even concerned about that. I did learn something a while back or something I read about — that you should set your program for five years out. I’m kinda on a five-year program. Five years from now, we’ll make a decision. So just keep rolling and just try to keep winning.”
Johnson: When it’s all over with, you can come down and be on the boat with me.
Carroll: “I’m going and we’re going to catch some fish.”
