FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP TONIGHT Highlights:
During the show, former USWNT member Heather Mitts received a text from her former teammate and current U.S. midfielder Carli Lloyd, who responded to Sweden head coach Pia Sundhage’s comments about her time coaching Team USA:
“I just received a text, and Carli Lloyd is aware of the words that Pia has said about her. And Pia – you’ve unleashed the beast.”
Mitts added about Sundhage’s comments:
“I’m just shocked. But, I will say the one thing about Pia is that she becomes very comfortable when she’s doing interviews and she just kind of blabs and speaks her mind a little bit too much, which she has done right here. And that is going up in the locker room for USA.”
Speaking on the controversial call that disallowed a late Mexico goal in its match vs. Colombia, Ariane Hingst says the World Cup is not the appropriate place for FIFA to try to develop referees:
“You don’t want to be disrespectful, but you put a referee in who has no experience in a league, because they don’t have any in Cameroon. I know FIFA is really trying to support women’s soccer, which is important, but this is not the right place. This is the World Cup, where it all matters. You put an inexperienced referee in that game, and she made the wrong decision that decides a game. Wrong way, FIFA.”
FOX Sports FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP 2015™ rules expert Dr. Joe Machnik says the call was incorrect:
“After watching nearly a half hour of video replays from every possible angle, even looking for a hand ball, I can’t find a single thing that would give me reason to believe what the referee was calling and why she blew the whistle. This is a goal that should have stood.”
Former Mexican international Monica Gonzalez says Mexico had other opportunities to capitalize:
“I don’t feel mad; I feel nauseous. I feel really bad for the girls. At the same time, it’s one of those things where I was always taught not to make excuses. I know Mexico will be kicking themselves because they know they had some opportunities and when it mattered, Colombia scored an incredible goal, and they deserve that point.”
