FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP TONIGHT Highlights:
Eric Wynalda on the U.S. performance vs. Nigeria:
“That’s just not good enough. It’s not good enough at all. You can smile and be happy about the 1-0 win, but this was a performance that was almost, I’d like to say, un-American.”
Leslie Osborne thought the U.S. did enough to win:
“It’s three points. They got the win. They started the game off better. There was better energy out there, more possession and movement on and off the ball. Alex Morgan looked good and fit. She was dangerous. Another solid performance from the backline and Hope Solo. Julie Johnston: beast mode. She’s coming up huge for this team. It can only get better from here. They have to score more goals and execute in the attacking third.”
Monica Gonzalez on the pressure Alex Morgan faces:
“People forget sometimes how much pressure she has. She’s had not only the weight of the U.S. National Team since 2011, but also in starting the new league in the NWSL. So it’s been about four years that she’s had that type of pressure on her, and I think probably Landon Donovan might be the only person who would know what it feels like – and Mia Hamm as well. I feel like that has something to do with the injuries she’s been having to deal with in the last four years. Getting her back is extremely important for the team.”
