FOX Broadcasts Long-Awaited UFC Bantamweight Championship Rematch on Saturday, July 25
In one of the most highly anticipated rematches in recent memory, UFC® bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw meets former champ Renan Barao when the Octagon returns to the United Center in Chicago on Saturday, July 25. FOX UFC® FIGHT NIGHT: DILLASHAW vs. BARAO 2 marks the seventh UFC championship bout to air on FOX.
After pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the sport’s history by dethroning then-champ Barao at UFC 173, Dillashaw (12-2, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.) puts the 135-pound strap on the line against the very man he took it from. Barao (35-2, 1NC, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), whose record includes eight wins by knockout and 15 by submission, looks to reclaim the title he held for almost two years. With more than 30 finishes between them, this championship rematch could be one of the best fights of the year.
Former bantamweight champion and current FOX UFC analyst Dominick Cruz believes Dillashaw holds the edge over Barao because of his movement. “Dillashaw switches his stance, and he has more weapons than Barao. Because he’s switching his stance, it causes problems for Barao. It keeps him guessing what Dillashaw will do next. Will he counterstrike or be offensive? Barao has been looking a little gun shy since his last fight with Dillashaw. He needs to get the aggressiveness back.”
Also featured on the main card, No. 2 women’s bantamweight Miesha Tate (16-5, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.) clashes with fifth-ranked Jessica Eye (11-2, 1NC, fighting out of Cleveland). With both women’s eyes set on a shot at champion Ronda Rousey’s title, Tate and Eye are in a high-stakes battle. As the only woman to take Rousey past the first round of competition, Tate hopes a dominant performance over Eye secures a trilogy matchup against the champ. For Eye, she looks to earn her first shot at the world title; something she feels is already rightfully hers.
Current UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and co-analyst Brian Stann join host Curt Menefee on the desk for the two-hour main card on FOX, as well as the two-hour prelims on FOX Saturday night. Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan call the fights on FOX live from the United Center in Chicago, while Erik “Goyito” Perez and Victor Davila make the call on FOX Deportes.
The main card also features two more thrilling matchups, including a vital lightweight clash between No. 7 ranked Edson Barboza (15-3) and Paul Felder (10-0). Veterans Joe Lauzon (24-11) and Takanori Gomi (35-10, 1NC) kick off the main card with another lightweight battle.
The two-hour FOX UFC FIGHT NIGHT PRELIMS start on FOX (6:00 PM ET) and feature four more action-filled bouts, including No. 15 ranked light heavyweight Gian Villante (13-5) against Tom Lawlor (9-5, 1NC), while lightweight Jim Miller (24-6, 1NC) battles Danny Castillo (17-8). Kenny Robertson (15-3) takes on Ben Saunders (18-6-2) in a welterweight bout and in a fight between two ranked contenders, No. 6 bantamweight Eddie Wineland (21-10-1) battles No. 12 Bryan Caraway (19-8) to open the PRELIMS.
