TODAY’S RESULTS
Germany def. France, 1-1 (5-4, on penalty kicks), to advance to the semifinals
USA def. China, 1-0, to advance to the semifinals
USA faces Germany in the semifinals on Tuesday, June 30, at 6:00 PM ET on FOX
Alexi Lalas says the USA’s first true test comes Tuesday against Germany in the semifinals:
“Now we find out what this team is all about. It was never about beating the likes of China or Colombia. It was always about beating the likes of Germany, and they get Germany right now. We find out whether those weaknesses that have shown up throughout this tournament are going to be problematic against a very good team, and the good stuff that’s out there, if it’s enough – especially that defense – to get them through to the Promised Land.”
Former German international Ariane Hingst previews Tuesday’s USA-Germany semifinal:
“This is going to be the battle between the best offense of this tournament so far and the best defense of this tournament so far. Will the Germans find the way to finally score against America? I think they will, but it’s going to be a tight match, and it’s going to be a good one.”
Kelly Smith says France missed opportunities to win the game on the field:
“When you don’t put the ball in the back of the net, and you’ve got a top German side, they’re going to punish you. Yes, it went to penalties, but France needed to score in those big moments.”
