FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP TONIGHT Highlights:
Eric Wynalda said Amy Rodriguez’s insertion into the starting lineup sparked the U.S. in its quarterfinal win over China:
“Amy Rodriguez was our general, and she led the charge. She was absolutely fantastic. She brought all kinds of energy.
“Numbers in front of the net scores you goals. The Chinese hated that, and I guarantee that the Germans won’t like it either. I loved this game plan from Jill Ellis.”
Leslie Osborne said that Morgan Brian’s midfield play was key to Carli Lloyd’s offensive success:
“Morgan Brian did a great job embracing this holding mid position. It allowed Carli Lloyd to get higher up on the field where she’s more dangerous.
“Carli Lloyd is best when she’s closer to the goal.”
Ariane Hingst says USWNT head coach Jill Ellis has difficult decisions to make for her starting lineup:
“All of these players perform really well, so this is the worst-case scenario, but also best-case scenario. You have to pick your starting 11 from a bunch of really good players.”
Wynalda says Germany’s win was a blessing for the U.S.:
“At about the 75th minute-mark, every American was rooting for Germany. They were rooting for Germany because we knew they couldn’t beat this French team. We got lucky.”
Wynalda adds about the winner of the USA vs. Germany semifinal:
“Whoever wins this game wins it all.”
Christine Latham said France out-played Germany despite the loss:
“The French team came out and totally dominated – put the Germans on their heels. And it was a German team like we haven’t seen. Usually they’re confident and collected. They were disorganized and didn’t know what to do when they were down. But, because France didn’t finish, Germany got back into the game.”
Two-time World Cup champion with Germany, Hingst said Germany is always a threat to score:
“Even though France was dominant in the first half, you always have the feeling with Germany that they can score any time, and they kept themselves in the game.”
Hingst says Germany’s Celia Sasic, who scored twice in her team’s win over France, is Germany’s most dangerous weapon:
“She has good character, and she stands out in front of the team. She takes responsibility, she talks to her teammates during the game, and she keeps pushing them. She’s always a leader.
“Even if she might not have a good game, she’s still hard-working. With her personality, she’s essential on the field. Even off the field, she impacts her team, and everyone listens to her.”
