Final 2016 UEFA Euro Qualifiers to Decide Tournament Berths on FOX Sports
FOX Sports wraps up its extensive coverage of the 2016 UEFA European Championship Qualifiers starting Thursday, Oct. 8 through Tuesday, Oct. 13, across multiple platforms, and in Spanish on FOX Deportes. With five national teams already qualified, including host France, the results over six days of play decide all but four of the 19 remaining berths for the 24-team tournament next summer. The final four spots will be decided with playoff rounds in November, which are also featured on the FOX Sports channels.
FOX Sports’ jam-packed soccer lineup between Thursday and Tuesday features 26 UEFA EURO qualifying matches, an international friendly and the all-important Mexico-U.S. CONCACAF Cup playoff. Qualifying action begins on Thursday as Scotland faces Poland at 2:30 PM ET on FS2, while Romania and Finland clash at the same time on FOX Soccer Plus. FOX Soccer Plus also airs an international friendly between France and Armenia that same day at 5:00 PM ET.
Friday’s qualifying coverage is headlined by England and their all-time leading goal scorer, Wayne Rooney, against Estonia at 2:30 PM ET on FS2. That evening at 7:30 PM ET, FS1 kicks off its coverage of the CONCACAF CUP, Saturday night’s one-match winner-take-all playoff between Mexico and the United States, with an hour-long preview show, COUNTDOWN TO THE CONCACAF CUP.
On Saturday, a struggling Netherlands side on the verge of missing out on UEFA EURO 2016, takes the field against Kazakhstan in a must-win match at 11:45 AM ET on FS2 and FOX Deportes. Later that day comes the Mexico-U.S. showdown, with kickoff at 9:30 PM ET on FS1. A special 90-minute pregame show begins at 8:00 PM ET, live from a sold-out Rose Bowl in Pasadena as the two teams prepare for their quest to represent the region in the prestigious 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. FOX Deportes features special segments on LA ULTIMA PALABRA, CENTRAL FOX and FOX DEPORTES EN VIVO from outside the stadium prior to the match. The Mexico-U.S. showdown marks the beginning of FOX Sports’ Road to Russia and the network’s coverage of FIFA WORLD CUP RUSSIA 2018.
UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying action continues Sunday, Oct. 11 as FS1 airs a doubleheader with Finland vs. Ireland (11:30 AM ET) and World Cup champion Germany vs. Georgia (2:30 PM ET). The final matchdays wraps up on Monday and Tuesday, highlighted by Norway taking on Italy, Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 2:00 PM ET on FS1 and FOX Deportes.
Ian Joy hosts UEFA Euro Qualifying coverage on Sunday, Oct. 11 prior to both matches of the FS1 doubleheader and again Tuesday, Oct. 13 for Italy-Norway, alongside a rotation of analysts including Stuart Holden, Warren Barton, Mario Melchiot and Cobi Jones.
Austria, Czech Republic, England and Iceland have already joined host France in earning their spots for UEFA EURO 2016, but 19 other teams still need to qualify for UEFA EURO 2016 in France. The nine group winners and nine runners-up along with the third-placed side with the best record qualify directly for France. The eight remaining third-place teams compete in playoff matches to determine the last four qualifiers for the continent’s most preeminent national team tournament.
