Mexico – USA CONCACAF Cup Thriller Sets Men’s Soccer Record on FS1
The CONCACAF CUP, the one-match winner-take-all playoff between rivals Mexico and the United States for a coveted spot in the FIFA 2017 Confederations Cup and the biggest international soccer game on U.S. soil in 2015, is now the most-watched men’s soccer match ever on FS1.
The nail-biting contest, in which Mexico netted the winning goal with just two minutes remaining in extra time to beat the U.S., 3-2, scored 1,561,000 viewers, according to figures released today by Nielsen. The viewership sets a new FS1 record for men’s soccer, and only three matches from the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup have recorded bigger soccer audiences on the channel. The audience peaked at 2,024,000 between 11:15 and 11:30 PM ET as the game rushed to its thrilling conclusion.
Immediately following Mexico-USA, FOX SPORTS LIVE, which featured extensive post-match coverage from the Rose Bowl, averaged 394,000 viewers, a triple-digit percent increase over the show’s 2014 October average in that same window. The show featured live interviews from several players from both teams, including Mexican star striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and winning goalkeeper Moises Munoz. The night also featured the English-language debut of longtime Univision broadcaster and three-time Emmy Award winner Fernando Fiore.
Approximately 79,000 unique viewers watched the match on FOX Sports GO, making it one of the 10 most-watched soccer matches ever on the app, surpassed only by select Women’s World Cup and UEFA Champions League matches.
