Saturday’s Bundesliga Action Features No. 1 vs. No. 2 as Borussia Dortmund Hosts League-Leading Bayern Munich
Defending champions Bayern Munich travel to Borussia Dortmund for “Der Klassiker,” one of Bundesliga’s most anticipated matchups of the season, as the league-leaders look to increase the gap at the top of the table when they take on their nearest challengers, Saturday, March 5 (12:20 PM ET). FOX Sports is providing fans four separate opportunities to watch this hugely significant game via television and its digital platforms, live or via re-airs, over the weekend.
The last time these two teams met, Bayern Munich dominated 5-1 in a match highlighted by two goals each from superstars Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller. FOX Sports host Ian Joy and analysts Eric Wynalda and Jovan Kirovski, all Bundesliga veterans in their playing days, share their thoughts on Saturday’s key matchup and predict if the Bavarian squad can dominate their arch rival once again:
Wynalda: “Dortmund has maintained the pressure and kept Bayern in their sights, and a win on Saturday would close the gap from eight points to five. If you are ever going to slay the dragon [Bayern] and make this title race interesting, this would be that opportunity for Dortmund. They have the fire power to beat them and Bayern knows it.”
Joy: “Bayern are well on their way to more silverware for the fourth year in a row, but I’m looking for Dortmund and [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang to shine on Saturday. Lately, the conversation has revolved around Bayern Munich’s issues at central defense with many players missing through injury, but having a goalkeeper like Manuel Neuer, and Lewandowski and Muller in-form up top changes everything. Plus Franck Ribery is starting to make an impact again.”
Kirovski: “This is going to be one of the best atmospheres you will see you in sports. I spent four seasons in Germany with Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion and it is not an easy place to come and play. You can see it in their home record.”
“Der Klassiker” is televised live on FOX Soccer Plus and streams live on FOX Sports GO and FOXSportsGO.com as a one-time special offering. The match also re-airs on FS1, FS2 and FOX Sports Regional Networks throughout the weekend, including a prime time presentation on Saturday, March 5 at 7:00 PM ET on FS2, and at 11:30 PM ET on Sunday, March 6 on FS1.
“It has been our privilege to give Bundesliga soccer unprecedented exposure in the U.S. this season, and we recognize how important this particular match is, so given its kick-off time we’ve worked very hard to make Der Klassiker available live and on delay as widely as possible given our pre-existing commitments,” said Patrick Crakes, FOX Sports Senior Vice President, Programming, Research and Content Strategy. “Fans who subscribe to FOX Soccer Plus are all set, and for those who don’t, anyone who is authenticated to receive FS1 through their local video provider can stream this match live on FOX Sports GO and FOXSportsGO.com, with televised re-airs throughout the weekend on FS1, FS2 and FOX Sports Regional Networks.”
In addition to the Bayern Munich-Borussia Dortmund clash, FOX Sports continues its coverage of Germany’s top soccer league with nearly a dozen more Bundesliga matches on FOX Sports channels this week, beginning today. Bundesliga action returns to U.S. broadcast television on Saturday, March 19, with a yet-to-be-announced matchup. This week’s full schedule follows:
